Assignment 1
My favorite video game is Metal Gear Rising, Revengeance. A hack and slash video game set in the Metal Gear Solid universe. The story
takes place in the state of Colorado in the year 2018; four years after the
events of Metal Gear Solid 4, Guns of the Patriots.
The story revolves around
the main character Raiden, the protagonist, who has been contracted to protect
a private military company in a damaged America, piecing itself back together
after a bloody civil war. Raiden was protecting a VIP when a cyborg
organization known as the Desperado Enforcement led by Samuel “Jetstream” Rodrigues, attacked them. Others in the unit were Sundowner, Mistral, Monsoon, and an animalistic cyborg named Blade Wolf. They ultimately killed the VIP
that Raiden was ordered to protect and a vicious sword fight with Jetstream
leaves Raiden severely injured and left for dead. Raiden, being part man and
part machine himself, was reconstructed and sent out on a quest for revenge to
bring down the cyborgs and the organization they work for which would
eventually end in a grudge match with Jetstream.
The Blade Wolf was known to possess an advanced intellect, even by human standards. With his advanced intelligence, Blade Wolf was a highly effective weapon, capable of using logic, reason and independent thought to aid him in missions. Blade Wolf's Artificial Intelligence was sentient and modeled after the human brain, hence capable of human emotions and behaviors, such as curiosity, sarcasm, fondness, affinity and learning capacity. He also appeared to be able to experience physical sensations such as pain as well. Blade Wolf was forced to follow The Desperado's orders or would lose his memory. Hence, he followed orders out of self preservation rather than a willing desire to fight. As a result, Blade Wolf yearned for his own freedom.
While under his forced servitude under Desperado, Blade Wolf had a variety of blade-type weaponry. These included at least six spring-loaded knives that can be flung at an enemy at a quick rate. These knives, upon being launched, are also superheated to the extent that they can sear through metallic surfaces. In addition, he also had a chainsaw attached to his back, with a cutting ability strong enough to cut through stone as well as single handedly cause most of an entire building to collapse. This was because the rotating mechanism had been modified to allow the chainsaw's teeth to vibrate at high-frequency. The chainsaw was useful for multiple applications in combat, including securing battle zones and close range offensives. Blade Wolf's tail also acted as a manipulator arm, which he would utilize to hold his chainsaw and wildly swing it from a distance. He also had sharp claws, which he could use to grip and pin down enemies.
Mistral was born to French and Algerian parents in the country of Algeria. She was orphaned at a very early age during the Algeria Cilvil War in the 1990s. She would eventually find her parents' murderers, and, in her words, "butcher" them. Afterwards, she decided that killing people was her calling, and served in the French Foreign Legion. She participated as a combatant in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with a kill count in the dozens. Despite killing being her calling, she found the action itself to be "dull," comparing it to dominoes. She even grew envious of her prey because they had causes to fight for even though she didn't. Before she came to Desperado, she felt she didn't have any purpose other than to kill anything in her path.
Mistral had the ability to take the arms of Dwarf Gekko, a.k.a. Tripods, and attch them to her body while also using them as weapons.
She could attach up to 14 arms of Dwarf Gekkos to her body, 7 arms on each side. She could also use the remaining cores as volleys to bombard her foes with, throwing them at a fast enough velocity to generate flames. In addition to using her L'Etranger as a whip and spear, she could also utilize it in addition to a cartwheel to mow people down in a similar manner to a buzz-saw. She could also loosen both ends to act as grappling hooks to damage the environment and her opponents with a slam. She was also an expert knife thrower and could use her many arms to through several blades at once at high velocity speeds.
Monsoon seemed to believe that the point of humans was to fight, be consumed with greed and kill, which was based on his childhood in Cambodia. He was fluent in Khmer, Chinese, and English. Unlike the other Winds of Destruction, he wasn't a former member of any military or paramilitary organizations prior to enlisting with the group. Instead, he was a former gang member. Full details on his past are unknown.
Monsoon's wielded sai weapons and his body was a unique cyborg chassis consisting of a series of segments held together by powerful electromagnetic forces which could separate considerable distances while still remaining part of the whole. This ultimately allowed Monsoon to perform incredible feats that other cyborgs couldn't such as dodging sword slashes and separate his body to increase his reach or attack from multiple angles at once. In addition, the magnetic generator was powerful enough to even allow Monsoon to lift even huge objects into the air that possess traces of metal like massive tanks or attack planes and hurl them through the air at an enemy. The generator was also refined enough to also grant him the ability to stick on metal structures, as his magnetic abilities allowed him to walk upside down or vertically along walls.
Sundowner was born in Alabama to a poor family. Although he had decent grades throughout school and was described as being a solid student, he never had the money to go to college, so he served in the military instead and participated in the Invasion of Panama, the Gulf War, the Iraq War, and Afghanistan. By 2008, he dropped out of official military service and served as a mercenary. He also had a habit of leaving a lot of blood from his enemies, enough to make it look like the sunset, hence why he had the codename "Sundowner." Due to his growing up in Alabama, he also spoke with a heavy Southern United States accent.
When he was not undergoing combat instances that require weapons, he wore a trenchcoat that was matte black with red on the bottom. His custom cyborg body could mount six shield-like platforms in the sockets on his back and pivot them forward to act like shields. These shields were explosive reactive armor that could repel attacks and gave him a slightly similar appearance to a Japanese shogun. His most relied upon weapon, however, were a pair of large machete blades that could also form into a shears-like contraption, called "Bloodlust". Dubbed as pincer blades when used as a single weapon, they acted as Sundowner's signature weapon whenever he was fighting at his peak. He also possessed significantly enhanced strength.
Samuel Rodrigues was descended from a long line of swordsmen, dating back to 16th century Japan. His father ran a Brazilian Kenjutsu dojo, and specifically taught the Uradachi technique, better known as "the murdering sword." Sam's father was eventually killed by one of his pupils. Although not before Sam personally inherited his Murasama blade from his father. He later had the Murasama blade modified into an high frequency blade with an ID lock. Already a superlative sword, this led to the creation of an incredibly powerful HF Blade which glowed an eerie red color. He then left Brazil, presumably to train, and eventually returned to kill the pupil in question before leaving Brazil permanently. Afterwards, he traveled the world as a mercenary, and taking various odd jobs, including a job as a bodyguard.. He also made a name for himself in the criminal underworld,
His codename "Jetstream" derived after the cool Brazilian wind,
Sam did not have a lot of cybernetic enhancements. His body was nearly all original. The only enhancement was that of his arm. The rest of his exoskeleton suit enhanced his strength, durability, speed and agility as a means of matching up to other cyborgs. He displayed great skill in his usage of his Murasama sword. Despite only wearing an exoskeleton. In terms of sheer combat ability, demonstrated sufficient knowledge in hand-to-hand martial arts; capable of fighting bare-handed, as well as using a defensive throwing technique that is very reminiscent of Judo. Sam could also read peoples' skills and personalities very easily. He tended to taunt his opponents in order to sway their focus.
Metal Gear Rising has by far
one of the best musical hard rock soundtracks I’ve ever heard in a game. The
game has several vocalized pieces playing throughout the game but mostly in
major boss battles. During the boss battle, once the player has whittled down
most of the bosses health, a vocalized piece of the theme will play during the
remainder of the battle. Each boss has their own theme that plays during the
fight. The music and lyrics also tie into some aspect of their characters. For
example, Blade Wolf’s theme “I’m My Own Master Now,” refers to its servitude of
its cyborg unit team and has a desire to be free from their command and live up
to its full potential. The musical soundtrack adds to the overall experience and
the synchronization adds to the intensity of the boss battles and was rewarded best soundtrack of the year in 2013.
This game will always be on
the top of my list for the best games ever played. The over the top action and
amazing cinematics make it feel like an action movie anyone would dream of. My
first time playing it I was blown away. Set in a series that is about stealth
and sneaking around, it brought a new element that hadn’t been explored that
much before and delivers what was promised. I highly recommend it.
